In 2015, a series of events led to the absence of housing options for people with I/DD in the Warren County area. A group of families and passionate investors stepped in to create the ideal community that could survive in perpetuity.
The Bethel Hills Community vision addresses an ongoing gap in the choices afforded to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities - to allow the option for people to live in community with their friends and others who value them.
Officially established as Advocates for Community Choice (ACC), Bethel Hills was established to generate partners in the vision for an intentional, integrated neighborhood and supportive, Christ-like atmosphere.
Just because a person is intellectually or developmentally challenged, does not mean they all are the same. No one size fits all for housing.
· The current norm is to place those with I/DD in cities, towns, and established neighborhoods, away from others with disabilities, integrating into various other communities. For some, this has been a good change and a happy opportunity for their lives. Others feel forced to live in an unpreferred - isolated away from friends and familiar communities. Loneliness is a common result for many.
· Many people with disabilities have been placed in nursing homes, boarding homes, and other locations where they are not able to thrive.
· Many are living with aging parents. There is a great need for affordable housing.
The Bethel Hills vision is to meet the need for a new neighborhood option.
We’ve joined the national conversation and are speaking with legislators to advocate for options with Bethel Hills and for the rights of adults with I/DD, especially those who cannot speak for themselves. See our Blog page for our current legislative efforts and ways you can help advocate for people who cannot speak for themselves.
We covet your prayers and your partnership as we push forward.
